HOPE BEGINS WITH YOU

How one conversation helped Tim rediscover hope

Tim's Story: From Darkness to Hope

Because of supporters like you, patients facing their darkest moments don’t have to face them alone. Hospital chaplains are there to listen, to care, and to walk alongside people when hope feels out of reach.

Tim’s story shows just how powerful that support can be.

When Tim* arrived at the Emergency Department, he had reached a breaking point.

He felt utterly overwhelmed and without hope. Sitting in the busy emergency department, he felt completely alone. He had lost hope and told staff he didn’t want to go on.

That’s when hospital chaplain Bronwyn met him. She sat beside him and listened.

Tim shared the pain he had been carrying—the regret, the grief, and the feeling that his life had gone too far off track. Bronwyn didn’t rush him or try to offer easy answers. She simply stayed with him in that moment.

Sometimes, when someone is in crisis, what they need most is a person willing to sit with them in the darkness.

A Small Step Toward Hope

As they talked, Bronwyn gently reminded Tim that setbacks didn't have to define him and that coming to the hospital took courage.

Slowly, the conversation began to shift.

Tim agreed to reconnect with supportive people in his life and to seek help beyond the hospital. With his permission, Bronwyn helped him contact a family member he had been estranged from.

It was a small step—but an important one.

Before Tim left the hospital, something had changed. For the first time in a long while, he could see that hope might still be possible.

Sometime later, Tim contacted Bronwyn unexpectedly. She was initially concerned, but he simply wanted to say thank you. And then he said something Bronwyn will never forget:

Reflecting on that moment, Bronwyn says:

"You saved my life that day in ED."

"He had gone from that place of darkness into a place of life. That transformation I had been hoping to see was really happening."

Why Chaplaincy Matters

Every day, hospital chaplains meet patients who are struggling with mental health challenges, addiction, grief, and despair.

Medical teams provide extraordinary clinical care. But in moments of emotional and spiritual crisis, patients also need someone who can listen deeply and walk alongside them.

Chaplaincy offers that presence.

Sometimes, the journey back to hope begins with a single conversation.

Because of You, Someone Will Be There

SUPPORTER  VOICES

“As a Staff Nurse working on a very busy medical ward, I found the services of a hospital chaplain to be absolutely essential to provide support, companionship and spiritual help at times of great vulnerability for patients and their families.”
