A Letter to the Elders we Serve and Support

Dear Elders,

Today, on 'Letter to an Elder Day', we want to write not just as chaplains, but as grateful witnesses to your lives.

Each day in hospital rooms and quiet ward spaces, we have the privilege of sitting beside you. We hold your hands. We listen to your stories. We hear about childhood memories, lifelong loves, family milestones, careers faithfully carried out, communities served, and faith sustained across decades.

You remind us that a life is not measured by its current frailty, but by the depth of its story.

To those we meet in hospital beds — vulnerable, weary, sometimes anxious — please know this: your dignity does not diminish with age. Your worth is not reduced by illness. The wisdom you carry, the resilience you have built, and the love you have given remain powerful and present.

And to our older supporters — our prayer partners, donors, volunteers, and encouragers — many of whom have sustained this ministry for years: thank you. Your quiet faithfulness strengthens us more than you know. Your prayers travel into hospital corridors. Your generosity becomes presence at the bedside. Your encouragement steadies our hands and hearts.

You have shaped families, churches, communities and causes. You have endured hardships and celebrated joys. You have carried faith through changing times. And even now, you continue to teach us — about patience, perspective, humour, courage, and hope.

We see you.
We honour you.
We thank God for you.

On this day especially, may you know that your story matters. Your life matters. You matter.

With gratitude and deep respect,

The Hospital Chaplaincy Team

A Prayer for Our Elders

God of every generation,
We thank you for the elders among us —
for lives richly lived,
for stories bravely told,
for faith quietly sustained.

Be close to those in hospital today.
Bring comfort where there is pain,
peace where there is anxiety,
and companionship where there is loneliness.

Strengthen those who continue to support and encourage others through prayer and generosity.
Remind them that their lifelong faithfulness still bears fruit.

Help us to honour their dignity,
to listen well,
and to receive the wisdom they offer.

May they know they are cherished —
today and always.
Amen.

SUPPORTER  VOICES

“As a Staff Nurse working on a very busy medical ward, I found the services of a hospital chaplain to be absolutely essential to provide support, companionship and spiritual help at times of great vulnerability for patients and their families.”
